Counting conventions

A readable estimate, not a publishing rule.

Words follow your browser’s language-aware word boundaries. Characters count Unicode characters, so pasted emoji are not split into surrogate halves; “without spaces” removes all whitespace, including line breaks. A paragraph is a non-empty block separated by a blank line. Sentence counts follow browser sentence boundaries, and reading time rounds up from 200 words per minute.

Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time update as you enter text. Counting conventions are explained below.

A couple of useful details

Know the shape of your draft.

Paste or write your text to see counts update as you go. Use the numbers as a quick check, not a verdict on whether the writing is done.

Example

A 500-word note is roughly a short read.

Worth knowing

Reading time rounds up from 200 words per minute; sentence and word counts follow browser language-aware boundaries, not an external platform’s publishing rules.

Do spaces count as characters?

The tool shows characters with and without whitespace, so you can use the convention a form asks for.
